Okay, back to budgeting for expenses in this big, bad city. And while you can make subtle negotiations over housing, transport and communication expenses, you don’t want to take a risk with your food budget. I’ll share some basic pointers about planning your meals and shopping accordingly so that you don’t ever buy groceries in an unplanned manner, thereby spending more than you need to.
#1. Get used to the idea of eating the same things every day. Not only can you create meal plans that are healthy, you’ll save a ton on groceries. Different weeks can have different meal plans.
#2. Welcome to the world of cooking in bulk. You can make an entire batch of rice and beans – my current favourite – and store it in the fridge, maybe even in several smaller containers for individual portions.
#3. God is in the details. Plan every single meal and snack you’ll consume throughout the day, every day, over a week and then shop and cook accordingly. It sounds like a lot of work but in the end, you save time over the week prepping and cooking for every meal.
#4. This is a no-brainer and we all know this by now – always eat a nice meal before going food shopping. It prevents bad choices and helps you stick to your budget.
